Fluoridation History - City of Prince George

"Seek First to understand, then be understood"
Stephen Covey; Seven Habits of Highly effective people.
The history of fluoridation in the City of Prince George is a very long, somewhat complex story, relatively well documented over many years in local Prince George Citizen News Paper Archives.  The purpose of this section is to cover the fluoridation story from a local perspective.   International research most likely was not made completely available to City residents beginning in 1954 as the information may have been available only through Universities and some professional association.  Considerable research occurred over the sixty years of the City's fluoridation activities.  The research will be included and linked for the time period providing a comprehensive "20-20 Hindsight" picture on the much larger fluoridation story.

Fluoridation, the consumption of fluoride and related elements became known to be harmful to people across many generations beginning  in 1886, when fluorine was first isolated as an element.

In 1915 the City prepared letters patent incorporating the community of Fort George into a municipality, the City of Prince George.  In 1998, the original Letters Patent were changed retroactively to accommodate fluoridation, ending democracy for all City residents.

Could 2014 be the year the failed fluoridation experiment ends?

In 2015, the City of Prince George will celebrate 100 years and host the Winter Games.  What have we learned over the past 100 years?

Local information provided is obtained from many credible, social history sources including; the local Prince George Citizen News Paper - Library archives, archival information from the Cariboo Observer the other "local" paper covering the Cariboo including Quesnel and Prince George.  Additional references covering local City of Prince George information include a Freedom of Information request begun in 2013, partially filled and part of ongoing Freedom of Information activities. Some of the reasons provided by the City of Prince George for withholding fluoridation information:

“Some records, in whole or in part, have been withheld pursuant to section 12 (Cabinet and local public body confidences), Section 13 (Policy advice or recommendations), Section 14 (Legal Advice) and Section 22(1) (Disclosure harmful to personal privacy) of the Act.” (City of Prince George: October 11, 2013 - FOI request response letter).

A recent, March 2014 FOI-request to Northern Health has resulted in no information being provided by Northern Health at this time.

If they are willing to have a healthy discussion, why are they withholding important fluoridation information?

One might reasonably conclude; information being withheld could harm the people who made the decisions to support the addition of sodium fluoride, sodium silicofluorid and hydrofluorosilicic (fluorosilicic) acid to our once pure and safe, water.

Fluoridation is known to harm people and animals drinking the diluted toxins.

Why is the protection of our children, ourselves and our environment not as important to those who made the decisions to begin fluoridation?

If fluoridation was safe, why would the Mayor, Council and City Administration need forgiveness and protection because they approved and support forced fluoridation?

This section will grow as more historic, credible and documented information is made available and discovered.

Understanding why Mayor and Council in 1954 decided to add sodium fluoride to the water of the young and growing City of Prince George begins with developing a historic understanding of the City in it's early, developing years.

Who were the people?  What were they doing?  What were the children and students doing?  How much did it cost to live and work here?  What were some of the community, health, social, work and political activities?  What challenges were City leaders facing that may have supported their desire for the City of Prince George to be "the first incorporated City in British Columbia" to fluoridate their residents?

Will Prince George be the LAST City to figure out the harmful effects of fluoridation and end fluoridation?

Why did the Mayor and Council of 1954 chose to ignore public concerns?

Many long term and respected residents wrote letters regarding stopping fluoridation before it began.  The Mayor, Council and City administration choose instead to add a poison, sodium fluoride fully supported by many local dentists, doctors, Northern Health Authority and others to their once clean, safe and pure drinking water.

These questions and many others remain partially unanswered as we cannot know the thoughts of those who initially and currently continue to support fluoridation.  There is a possibility that well meaning people in the early years of fluoridation, did not have all of the information on the harmful effects brought about by their best of intentions to help the City. There is no longer any need for confusion regarding the many harmful effects from  consuming fluoride, lead, arsenic and other known to be toxic chemicals, except; possibly by those with their own less than respectable agendas, possibly including having difficulties saying;

"I am sorry for the harm we caused, we made a mistake and we will do better, next time!"

Fluoridation could end the same way it was brought in, through a resolution by Mayor and Council.  This time choosing to consider the wishes of many people, including the lack of scientific consensus that fluoridation is harmless, instead of ignoring respected and individual, democratic rights including social and political commitments, to do no harm.

How important is democracy, morality, informed consent and respectful values to you?

Ever wonder what harm adding the identified, toxic, hazardous waste by-products are doing to you, to your children, to your pets, to the environment?

What about;  pregnant mothers, babies, children, boys and girls, men and women, old and young, some with health issues, people of different ethnic backgrounds including our pets,  horses, cattle, other animals and aquatic life such as salmon?

The truth may not surprise you - then again it could anger and disgust you!

Anyone who doesn't take truth seriously in small matters
cannot be trusted in large ones either.

The History of fluoridation in the City of Prince George, begins around 1937, several years before Mayor and Council approved a resolution to add fluoride to the drinking water, October 4, 1954.

1937 was an earlier time, before sodium fluoride - miraculously changed from a toxic insecticide; used to kill ants, red mites and lice on local Fort George farms and in the newly incorporated City of Prince George.  Sodium fluoride was locally known as a poison, harmful and poisonous to children, adults and animals.  How did a known poison suddenly become safe to drink, miraculously able to protect teeth?  A young Danish researcher living in Copenhagen in 1937, Kaj Roholm began to gather all known information from the time including earlier research regarding Fluorides, including over 800 peer reviewed and published research.  Did this information become available to local Doctors and Dentists?

Dental fluorosis was identified as a symptom of fluoride poisoning in 1925!

The internet did not exist, so all correspondence was done by writing letters; snail mail and reading hundreds of published articles including speaking with the researchers and the many critics!  The United States was also conducting it's own research, that seemed to suggest fluoride was good for teeth.

That was only part of the more complex fluoride story.

The rest of the story will be added over time

"Watch Closely Poultry Cleanliness"

In 1942, local farmers were learning more about keeping their poultry healthy, free from lice and mites.  Sodium fluoride mixed with sulfur powder could be used to keep the chickens free of lice and mites!

"Some poultrymen prefer to dust their birds with sodium fluoride and powder of sulphur."

In 1950, "The Pharmacology of Fluoride" was written by Doctor Gustav Rapp.  In his fourteen page publication he identified;  "The dental profession and the public at large have been made conscious of the potentially important role of fluoride in the control of dental caries."   "The topical application of soluble fluoride to tooth surfaces has had a moderate amount of practical success;"

"The second method of fluoride treatment, which consists of adding the drug to communal waters, is based on the premise that adding sodium fluoride to ordinary domestic water produces the same aqueous environment for teeth as is found in the endemic fluoride areas in the country. The validity for this premise is still highly questionable and is to be touched upon later in the paper."

The report identified several sources of fluorides including food in the soil or water in the environment they grew in contained some level of fluorides.

Prince George residents who water their trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetable gardens with City of Prince George hydrofluorosilicic acid treated water, are unknowingly adding fluoride to their plants and garden vegetables. Some of the known industrial origins of fluoride exposures came from; Emery wheels (used to sharpen tools), laundry bleach, insect powders, wood stain and glass etching activities.

Absorption of sodium fluoride using test animals identified that fluoride absorption was dependent on Ph, the acidity level in the dog (or water).  At a pH of 7.0 -  22 % of fluoride was absorbed into the body.  At a pH of 8.0 - 18% of fluoride was absorbed.  City of Prince George water pH is now between 7.0  and 8.0 (7.58 according to a City of Prince George 2013 water analysis conducted by Watertrax).

The amount of fluoride retained (stored) in the test animal bodies varied on age of the animal (1 year old - 52% fluoride retention) to 220 days (83% of fluoride retained).  This is similar for people with an average of 50% of consumed / ingested or absorbed fluoride retained (range 15% to 85%).  Fluoride retention is also affected by the amount of fluoride consumed, the health of the individual, ethnicity and age.

Lethal levels of fluoride were identified for various parts of the body identifying; the blood, brain, bones, teeth,  liver, kidney, heart, spleen and muscles as location that fluoride would harm. Fluoride was reported to affect carbohydrate metabolism, enzymes, that could interfere with insulin, connected to diabetes. "This does not mean at all that fluorides cause diabetes!  It merely means that the presence of fluorides seems to interfere with metabolic systems similar to those affected by an insufficiency of insulin."

The Beginning of Fluoridation?

"Scientists say fluorine, which can be put in drinking water, is good for tooth enamel and prevents cavities in children's teeth."
In 1951, the beginning of fluoridation advertising started.  A very small, single sentence was published in the Prince George Citizen, with no identified source or authority....

PicturePrince George Citizen – Archives: February 28, 1952
By 1952, the advertising machine; how to sell you something you do not need, but might make you socially more sophisticated was well on it's way.  Edward Bernays wrote a book called Propaganda in 1928, how to manipulate people!

"Edward Louis Bernays (November 22, 1891 − March 9, 1995) was an Austrian-American pioneer in the field of public relations and propaganda, referred to in his obituary as "the father of public relations". He combined the ideas of Gustave Le Bon and Wilfred Trotter on crowd psychology with the psychoanalytical ideas of his uncle, Sigmund Freud.

He felt this manipulation was necessary in society, which he regarded as irrational and dangerous as a result of the "herd instinct" that Trotter had described.  Adam Curtis's award-winning 2002 documentary for the BBC, The Century of the Self, pinpoints Bernays as the originator of modern public relations, and Bernays was named one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century by Life magazine."

New lipsticks, "to keep her smile attractive" were being sold.  For the good wife, "white teeth are just as important".  "New tooth powder which contains penicillin, reportedly a good check on caries [cavities].  This was a time when scientists and advertisers were searching for new ways to help reduce cavities, get you to purchase products that were not home made, and make some money, while freeing up the sophisticated, modern, liberated women!

Fluoridation did not have to work, only leave the perception it did and that you needed it, to be sophisticated and educated!

PicturePrince George Citizen – Archives: June 23, 1952.
Dental cavities in our children was a significant concern in 1952 and remains so today due in part to sugar consumption and as researched by Dr. Albert Schatz, poorer nutrition.

So in 1952, the Cariboo Health Unit was providing dental care education on how to brush your teeth with a follow-up examination in schools in the fall.  This was also a time to cover immunizations, measles and polio which were concerns.

Surprisingly, according to Dr. Brown, "there was much improvement in the condition of their teeth." Was it possible, a little education, better and more nutritious food (vitamin C), a little more sunshine (vitamin D) was all that was needed to improve the dental health of our children?

This was a time when City dentists have been cooperating excellently with our dental health program and we appreciate it.  so stated Dr. Brown.

Dr. Brown also noted, "that mothers seemed increasingly interested in the annual check-up for the school beginners, which he termed "a good sign."  Seems you needed to convince the mothers that proper dental care, teaching your children how to brush and care for their teeth was a "a good sign."

Dental care of our children's teeth, without fluoridation was possible!  Confirmed in 1952, two years before fluoridation was brought in, and three years before fluoridation began.

Picture Prince George Citizen – Archives: November 20, 1952
Five months later, a dentist shortage was identified.

In 1952, a shortage of qualified dentists including limited teaching centres meant there were very few dentists in Prince George.  Dr. H. M. Brown, Director, Cariboo Health Unit (now Northern Health) wrote the article asking the University of British Columbia “should be encouraged to establish a faculty of dentistry at the very earliest opportunity and that as a matter of extreme urgency.”  Today even with the College of New Caledonia having a dental program and the University of Northern BC having a medical program dentists and doctors remain needed in the north.  Could it be possible that many Doctors and Dentists know and understand the harm caused by drinking fluoridated water and this is one of the reasons there remains a shortage of qualified health professionals?

As an interim measure, “Certain measures” were recommended, briefly:  “1. An adequate diet in pregnancy and in early childhood; 2. Brushing the teeth or washing the mouth our immediately after the ingestion of food; 3. The avoidance of sugars and refined starches on our diet; 4. The fluoridation of public water supplies; 5. Regular attendance at the dentist.”

Fluoridation was recommended as a temporary measure, recommended due to the shortage of dentists, it was never intended to be permanent.  Even in 1952, Dr. Brown recognized that proper nutrition during pregnancy and in early childhood was critical to dental health as later identified by the Nobel Prize winner Dr. Albert Schatz.

PicturePrince George Citizen Archives: July 30, 1953.

In 1953, the Cariboo Health Unit and local dentists worked together to help bring fluoridation to the City of Prince George.  Unfortunately not all dentists receive in depth training regarding fluoridation when consumed over a long period of time.  Dentists are trained to use pharmaceutical grade fluoride, topically, that you spit out once the treatment is over.

"For every $1.00 spent on preventative dentistry the need for $30.00 worth of dental work can be eliminated.  This sounds like a bargain which we should not pass up."

If it sounds too good to be true.... it probably is too good to be true!

Picture
In 1953, Dr. Leo Spira, M.D., Ph.D. wrote "The Drama of Fluorine - Arch Enemy of Mankind."

"The problem of fluorine is the subject of heated discussion all over the country at the present time, in the large city, the provincial town and the remote village. An enlightened nation, brought up to use its own intelligence, refuses point blank to be told without adequate explanation what people should or should not do in matters affecting the health of each one of them. When it is proposed to tamper with their drinking water by altering its chemical composition, they insist on being given facts based on unbiased studies carried out by competent investigators. In short, the nation wants to know whether any risk of injury to health is involved."

"The information so far divulged about the problem of fluorine is, however, extremely biased.  When conveyed through the remorseless exploitation of scanty knowledge, the facts have in many cases been grossly distorted. Incessantly repeated to unsuspecting listeners, they might in the absence of contradiction easily be accepted as the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth."

So begins a well documented story on how fluorine the element used to make over 42 different types of fluoride added to water to create fluoridation.  The fluoridation story in 1953 was clearly controversial, unproven science, with some proven harms from fluorides clearly documented.

So how did fluoridation with sodium fluoride get sold to the early leaders of the City?

PicturePrince George Citizen Archives: October 1, 1953.
The Concerns expressed in 1952, that there was a severe dentist shortage was again reinforced in 1953.

Dr. H. M. Brown kept up his advocacy by adding more concerns to local citizens.  “Prince George and district residents are losing their teeth earlier than they should for the simple reason that there are not enough dentists to give prompt attention to dental disorders of the existing population."

Parents were concerned, their children and themselves had challenges with their teeth, sugar and refined foods were modernizing the city however, education on the causes for tooth decay were missing from most of the supporting fluoridation news articles.

Fluoridation research was new, exciting, incomplete and unproven.  Responding to urgent health needs in appropriate  ways is important.... However, as of 1937, fluoride and fluoridation was known to be toxic and corrosive.  Sodium fluoride was known by locals to be a poison used to kill lice, and red mites.

Fluoride was identified In 1889 - by Henri Moissian who discovered fluorine.

When experts put their reputation out there, without having all of the information need confirming what they are telling people to do, they place everyone at risk of harm.  They too are human and become solely responsible to provide a "duty of care" recognizing the rights of individuals to make their own informed decisions.

Finding out the truth about fluoridation and with holding that information to "save face" is a crime against humanity!

Fluoridation is a belief system.  It needed a creed or mantra be seen as the new reality, "safe and effective."  Their faith "trust us we are health professionals and we know better than you less educated and common people."  Forced fluoridation Is bullying.

Educated people include the common person who takes time to learn the whole story.

Thalidomide was once a doctor recommended medication, prescribed to help mothers.  It turned out that it did the opposite causing serious harms to children and families!  Similar to lead and many doctor recommended medications have had similar harmful results. Doctors make very human mistakes, with a far more significant and serious cost to each of us and our children!   We need their expertise, honesty and trust.

Doctors are held to a higher "duty of care" and need to be honest and trustworthy, respectfully treating us too!  Check out the law of negligence.

Regarding lead, the scientist who said lead was safe, Robert Kehoe, is also the main scientists who said fluoride was safe.  He was wrong about lead and he is wrong about fluoride!

PicturePrince George Citizen Archives: October 15, 1953
This October 15, 1953 letter to the editor from R. Locke clearly demonstrated that  a few of  the "regular people" of Prince George, even in 1953, knew, understood and did the research to confirm fluoridation was harmful.  Did the City consider the requests and need of all people living in Prince George in 1953?  NO.  The City resolution was approved October 4, 1954, with fluoridation beginning September 12, 1955 at 2:00 PM!  Letter copied for you reading information.

"Tough on Teeth

"Since the question of fluoridation of water has arisen locally, I should like to point out some of its dangers which have been brought to light by “Prevention magazine”.

"Sodium fluoride, used to fluoridate water in some areas, is poisonous and is used industrially for vermin extermination, laundry bleach, glass etching and hardening concrete.

"It has been found in results of experiments with fluoride that there is less incidence of cavities, but the teeth become mottled and, in time, deteriorate.

"Dr. H. R. Box of the dental faculty of the University of Toronto, reports that he has checked the teeth of a number of people who have been using naturally fluoridated water for several decades and found appalling gum disease and changes in structure of teeth, such as enlargement of the roots and narrowing of tooth canals and pulp chambers, indicating premature aging of the tooth structures, and making extraction very difficult.

"The bones of fluorine-fed animals are always chalky and fragile, as are the teeth.

"Recently, in Switzerland, cattle grazing near the aluminum smelters were found to be suffering from a fatal disease called “fluorosis”.  They had acquired the disease from eating grass upon which there were fluorine deposits from the aluminum plant.

"The same thing occurred near an aluminum plant near Vancouver, Washington.  The joints were noticeably enlarged, hooves soft and spreading, and the teeth increasingly blackened. Fluorine is also harmful to the action of certain enzymes, lessens blood coagulation and has a very toxic effect.  Much evidence has been found to prove that malnutrition, with special emphasis on vitamin C deficiency, provides the background for bad dental health and the usual infectious diseases of childhood.  R. Locke"

On the same day, October 15, 1953, in the same paper, on a different page the following article appeared, with no submitting source provided by the paper.  The article is rewritten, provided for your information.  Emphasis is added.

"Doctors, Dentists Boost Fluoridation

"Fluoridation of Prince George’s water supply to retard tooth decay and diminish dental troubles came a step nearer reality last week when a joint meeting of city dentists and doctors approved the plan.

"A movement to press the city council into laying fluoridation installation plans for next year is being sparked by the Cariboo Health Unit’s director, Dr. H. M. Brown.

"In a recent Citizen news story, Dr. Brown told how fluoridation would result in sounder teeth for all children here and would probably cost the city well under $5,000 for an initial installation of the required equipment.

"City dentists, who are expected to shortly form an association of members of their profession here met members of the Prince George Medical Association last week in the presence of Dr. Brown to discuss the fluoridation question.

"Both groups endorsed the project and tentative plans are being made to present the plans to the public.

"Aim of the professions supporting fluoridation is to arouse the general public’s enthusiasm for the plan to such an extent that city council will automatically follow."

PicturePrince George Citizen Archives: November 6, 1953.
The Prince George Citizen continued to print News Articles in support of fluoridation as provided by Dr. H.M. Brown, Director, Cariboo Health Unit. The News Paper withheld many letters in opposition to fluoridation as they continue to do today!

Dental information that was available indicated that,  "The erroneous belief that a child’s first teeth are unimportant 'because they fall out anyway' has added immeasurably to the staggering toll to adult dental disease in the United States and Canada, the President of the American Dental Association said recently."

Having the "President of the American Dental Association” supporting a newly developing Dental Association, supporting fluoridation provided significant support to local dentists.

Supporting dentists is important.  Supporting anyone at the cost of failing to support appropriate patient care needs may be considered a good “business practice” by some.

That kind of support, at the cost of children and families-individual, long term health is a completely unacceptable social practice.

If you can't trust the health profession, who can you trust?

The average Prince George residents were very busy working and providing for their families.  Taxes, food costs and housing costs compared to wages was a significant burden so they could not afford the costs of going to a good dentist as often as was now needed to due added sugars and refined foods causing increased cavities.

Professional reliance is a privilege cautiously conveyed on professionals by the public, it is not a right and it comes with significant responsibilities!

PicturePrince George Citizen Archives: November 16, 1953
The fluoride discussion continued for many months with letters from the "common" citizen, doing their own research and saying, "We do not want fluoride in our water" were ignored.  Instead, the assumed expertise of the Dentists and Doctors, using limited and incomplete research information continued to support fluoridation.

The mayor and council, as supported by the City administration also assumed  fluoridation was helpful and that the "common resident" would not be able to understand fluoridation harms.

People can learn and have learned that fluoridation needs to be ended based on ethical, scientific, social, moral and democratic responsibilities that continue to be ignored, even though each elected official, medical and dental professional have signed and taken an oath to do no harm to their patients and those who elected them.

Has fluoridation helped the "common people" or are some professionals benefiting?

PicturePrince George Citizen Archives: February 11, 1954
In early 1954, the dental and medical community was taking a "step forward" in  their campaign to bring sodium fluoride to the modern, sophisticated City of Prince George.

Unfortunately, the harm from fluoridation was ignored to the detriment of everyone for the past sixty years!

PicturePrince George Citizen Archives: February 25, 1954
The lobbying by local Dentists and Doctors continued, apparently by all of Prince George Dentists and Doctors,

"Prince George medical and dental experts are 100 per cent behind a proposed plan to institute artificial fluoridation here in the near future.  City  council Monday night received a joint statement from the Prince George & District Dental Society and the Prince George Medical Association urging the installation of fluoridation equipment at the earliest possible date.  Cost of the proposed installation has not yet been determined, but it is expected it will not run over $8,000.  A recommendation from the city's health committee urging the installing of fluoriding equipment was accepted by city council two weeks ago.  Medical and dental experts foresee a sharp drop in dental decay among persons who absorb the fluorine into their systems during the period when their teeth are forming."

What evidence did (do) the Dentists,  Prince George & District Dental Society and Doctors,  Prince George Medical Association including the city's health committee have that supports fluoridation, drinking hydrofluorosilicic acid, absorbing "the fluorine" into a persons body, would be healthy to people?

Who is responsible, accountable and liable for making the professional recommendation that "fluoridation is safe"?

PicturePrince George Citizen Archives: October 7, 1954
On October 7, 1954 the Citizen Paper reported that Mayor and Council of the day met to discuss the building topic of fluoridation.

"City council, Monday night unanimously supported a resolution which will see the inauguration of water fluoridation on Prince George next year."

Only 2 of the 377 students attending schools and checked for dental carries (cavities) had healthy teeth!  Our children were in pain, loving the sugar, candies,  and high starch products (newly available foods, like bread, not needing to be home made, providing more "free time" to modern mothers and sophisticated people).  Most parents could not afford high dental costs, high taxes and other costs of living in the new and growing City.

There was a need for water and sewer lines, fire departments, roads (and repairs), dentists, doctors and a hospital, all things that made a modern City successful.

So on the evening of October 4, 1954, elected representatives decided they would take action.  They had the support of the Medical Health Officer, Dr. H. M. Brown, Director of the Cariboo Health Unit (Our Northern Health Unit of today).

Cities who wanted to be seen as "progressive," "leaders," "caring" and "powerful," "well educated," people were taking the young, incomplete, well advertised fluoridation science and running with it.  The objective was to help our  children.  That was then.  There was no internet, fluoridation research was new, exciting and provided some hope to parents who wanted to help their children, and it might help get you re-elected too!

"Doctors and dentists throughout the city have endorsed the plan, and it has been steadily supported by the Cariboo Health Unit and its director, Dr. H.M. Brown.  City dentists, who were unanimous in support of a fluoridation resolution given to city council earlier this year, are prepared to provide information on the subject to any interested persons and will furnish speakers for local clubs."

Prince George would become "the first in British Columbia" to fluoridate its water supply."

Everyone was getting caught up in the advertising hype, of the father of advertising, Edward Bernays.  Women where encouraged by doctors to smoke cigarettes. Camels "Liberated the modern, sophisticated and glamorous women." Years later cigarette science was proven wrong, as smoking causes cancer and other addiction problems.  Cigarettes also contain over 7,000 related toxic chemicals, similar to hydrofluorosilicic acid, contributing to immediate and long term very expensive health issues.

Edward Bernays also supported fluoridation.  Fluoridation is proven to be wrong.  Yet there are many who chose not to believe that fact.

Question:  Why would a modern, sophisticated, well educated society continue to add toxic hazardous waste products such as hydrofluorosilicic (fluorosilicic) acid to our children's drinking water, bath's and swimming pools?

Picture
Here is a copy of the City of Prince George Council minutes from October 4, 1954.

Information provided by the City of Prince George as part of an ongoing  2013, Freedom of Information request.

"A regular Meeting of the Prince George City Council was held in the City Hall Council Chamber on:
 Monday, October 4, 1954, at 8:00 PM.

PRESENT:

"His Worship Mayor G. D. Bryant, Chairman, Alderman Clark, Alderman Ferry, Alderman Gabriele, Alderman Gray, Alderman Hilton and Alderman Williams.  The City Solicitor, Mr. P.E. Wilson, Q.C. was in attendance.

"Alderman Carrie Jane Gray, moved that fluoridation be approved for the City, Seconded by Alderman Williams and carried Unanimously!"

PicturePrince George Citizen Archives: November 25, 1954

Not all residents were in support of fluoridation and not all letters expressing those concerns may have been published by the newspaper.  The author, Mrs. C.H. Olds, was one of many resident opponents to fluoridation, the adding of sodium fluoride, a known poison to our children's drinking, swimming and bath water.

Many well informed and well spoken residents of the new City voiced their opinions about the harmful effects from fluoridation.  All were ignored.

The Mayor and Council chose to listen to the advice of dentists and doctors, resident "experts" having a more valid, better educated opinion.

Some education and limited experience with topical application of a controversial and young science of fluoride use by local dentists, topically applied trumped the democratic opinions of the citizens who, also trusting "experts" and doing their own research from a much larger information base were ignored by those who voted them in, the Mayor and Council.

Does forced fluoridation demonstrate Democracy or something else?

Drinking fluoride to protect teeth is like drinking suntan lotion to protect your skin from sun burn!
Both actions can cause you significant harm, neither one makes any sense and is not recommended!

PicturePrince George Citizen Archives: September 12, 1955

On September 12, 1955 at 2:00 PM in the afternoon, the City of Prince George began the fluoridation experiment.

Powdered sodium fluoride was added and mixed in a special machine built to inject sodium fluoride poison into City treated water, with the hope it would reduce cavities... and possibly believing that the poison might not cause other harms as advised by "experts" and media of the day.

"First fluoride-treated water ever distributed in a British Columbia city started flowing through Prince George's water works system at 2: PM today."

Actually, Smithers, BC was the first community to begin fluoridation of their residents a few months earlier.

The rest of the Smithers fluoridation story as taken from Prince George Citizen Archives and will be included later.

PicturePrince George Citizen Archives: September 15, 1955
On September 12, 1955, the City of Prince George began the fluoridation experiment,  apparently supported by all doctors and dentists in the City of Prince George, BC, Canada.

However, a few days later, September 15, 1955, the local pharmacy, 5th Avenue Pharmacy, published a "Counter doses for the Home - Poisons" emergency home response guide.  Identified in the guide was "Insect & Rat Poisoning - with sodium fluoride - antidotes at 14."

If sodium fluoride was now safe to drink and the City was dumping it in the drinking water at 1.0 mg / liter, why would a highly skilled, professional pharmacist  identify the need to publish a poison response guide to help local residents should their children become poisoned?

Common sense.  The pharmacist knew how toxic sodium fluoride is. Thank you to the Pharmacist!

Why is everyone else missing that common sense?

Fluorine, the chemical element including other toxins are wet-scrubbed in phosphate fertilizer production, also critical to aluminum manufacturing.  Some of the chemical producers, such as Cominico, sold hydrofluorosilicic acid for use in our drinking water. The hydrofluorosilicic acid had to be wet-scrubbed from the smoke stakes because it was killing the surrounding  vegetation (ancient forests), poisoning animals and polluting surface water.

In 1976 a toxic chemical release from the Alcan Aluminum manufacturing plant in Kitimat killed over 29 square miles of forest! The fluoride poisons, before being water scrubbed from smoke stacks was confirmed as the primary cause for tree death.

Canadian Forest Services research attributed the tree death to insects!  Insects were secondary attackers of the trees, primarily  killed by fluorides and other toxic chemicals.

There are some who suggest "naturally occurring"  oxygen is toxic to people.  In artificially increased levels or mishandled by untrained medical professionals, oxygen is toxic to people. For some people this may seem to be a  reasonable comparison that "naturally  occurring  fluorides"  are safe.  Lead and mercury are naturally occurring elements confirmed and readily accepted as toxic at all levels, now. Lead was once considered safe by those who sold it as tetraethyl lead. They were making a profit at the expense of the health and lives of our children, parents and families.

Who is profiting by saying fluoride is safe?

We are not consuming "naturally occurring fluorides", even though a small amount of naturally occurring fluoride does occur in the Nechako River water supply.  We are drinking toxic ingredients from hydrofluorosilicic (fluorosilicic) acid, being added to our drinking water, known to be toxic at any level!

Historic "natural" element background levels are so high that they can never again be achieved or measured against  current "natural"  chemical levels because of forced fluoridation contaminating our environment!

Those who support fluoridation struggle to apply common sense, where by some of our natural environment has many important naturally occurring elements supporting healthy life such as oxygen, regulated naturally for the most part.

Ignoring naturally occurring toxic elements that end life if out of balance, such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, lead, arsenic, mercury and fluorides (which  can exist at very high, naturally toxic levels, requiring removal from water systems) is an uneducated and incompetent lack of common sense approach to fluoridation.  Some people have learned what can help and what can hurt... fluorides, lead and arsenic hurt!

If there is any confusion on how toxic fluoridation is the burden of proof confirming fluorides are healthy for everyone, including our environment the duty of care is the sole responsibility of the people who want to apply the poisons to prove they are safe.  The City of Prince George, Northern Health and Health Canada continue failing to confirm consuming fluorides is safe!

That failure is defined as negligence.

No one approves fluoridation in Canada or the United States including the US FDA and the CDC!

We are not drinking naturally occurring fluorides at naturally occurring low levels, individually administered by trained health professionals.  We are being forcibly, mass fluoridated as we need water for life.  You have no choice.  No one is regulating individual toxic chemical consumption or individual needs, consuming the same toxic chemicals such as fluoride that kills trees, people and animals!

Confirmed, fluoride is toxic!

The City of Prince George recently added fluoridation information to the City Utilities web pages (February 2014), check out the City web site;

PictureCouncil Minutes and Videoed meetings
During a City of Prince George regular Council meeting on February 18, 2013 at Agenda item F3 (part 1 of 2) Committee of the Whole Recommendations, a discussion around stopping fluoridation occurred.

Councillor Albert Koehler recommend ending fluoridation by City resolution of Mayor and Council the same way fluoridation began.   Councillor Koehler's  recommendation was rejected.

Mayor and Council once again chose to ignore individual democratic rights guaranteed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, specifically:

"Equality Rights

15.(1) Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability."

In the extended discussion Mayor and Council would only agree to take the fluoridation question to a Referendum as part of the November 15, 2014 Municipal election.  The Council meeting discussion occurs at section "F3 - Part 1 of 2" between: 11:50 minutes (Fluoride) to 47:36 minutes in the public video.

A referendum does not resolve the fluoridation concerns.  A referendum continues to ignore individual Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms of each individual.  While a referendum may be seen by some as providing a possible solution to the fluoridation problem created by the 1954 Mayor and Council it actually continues the problem, making it worse.  A referendum means Mayor and Council have walked away from their obligations to protect residents of the City of Prince George!

The only reasonable solution to forced fluoridation is to end forced fluoridation as it began, with Mayor and Council, by City resolution, voting unanimously to end forced fluoridation!

Individual rights will be respected and maintained.  Northern Health is already spending between 1 and 2 million additional dollars to help those who can least afford to be poisoned through forced fluoridation.  This is confirmed through research by Nobel price recipient Dr. Albert Schatz

A referendum continues to ignore your individual right to SAY NO to forced fluoride medication and poisoning.

A referendum means any stranger with no vested interest in your children, family or friends, having no medical qualifications or personal knowledge of your individual health needs can force you to drink a Class 8, toxic hazardous waste (Guide Item No. 154) classified by Transport Canada (UN1778) or take un-prescribed by dentists and doctors fluoride medications defined by some as the "one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century" against your individual rights and parental responsibilities.  Research confirms how harmful fluoridation is!

A referendum means, You no longer have the Canadian, democratically understood right to ethically choose to say no!

A referendum places the right to be medicated in the hands of strangers, non-medical people, politicians and others.

A referendum acknowledges this is first time since Mayor and Council passed a fluoridation resolution, October 4, 1954 that your concerns may have some validity!

Councillor, Dr. Albert Koehler was able to confirm forced fluoridation is wrong.  Mayor and Council, by ignoring individual democratic rights, still don't believe they do not have the right to force you to drink poisoned water!

The lack of leadership is obvious with Mayor and some Councillors saying "We will agree to what ever the people want after the referendum."  Once again confirming they chose to ignore respectful and individually granted rights!

We want to thank Councillor Koehler for his efforts and once again demand from all of Council possibly beginning to consider fluoridation is wrong, to end forced fluoridation as it began, by unanimous resolution!

If we are forced to go to a vote and before you make a decision about fluoridation, adding hydrofluorosilicic (fluorosilicic) acid to your families water, please do the research to ensure you are making an informed decision.

Demand Mayor, Council and City administration including Northern Health publicly provide by providing every resident with all of the fluoridation facts, including  the harmful effects from consuming hydrofluorosilicic acid as defined in some material safety data sheets (Clear Tech and Mosaic including from the US EPA.

Your decision or indecision will affect everyone in the City, unless the Mayor and Council make a decision to end fluoridation the same way it began, through a resolution.

Mayor, Council and City administration including Northern Health owe an apology to everyone for ignoring individual rights protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.  Have you heard anyone say:

"I am sorry, we made a mistake in 1954, using the best information possible to help our children at that time and we will correct that mistake by ending fluoridation today."

A sincere apology could show considerable respect for all residents, as would providing a respectful discussion on fluoridation by making available and providing correct and unbiased information identifying fluoridation harms to all residents so we can be provided the opportunity to make an informed choice.

Before voters can make an informed decision we need credible, accurate information from all aspects of fluoridation!  That is the only reasonable, democratically acceptable right of choice!

Ask Mayor, Council, City administration and Northern Health to provide you with all of the facts from both sides of the discussion.  The City and Northern Health are withholding that information, choosing to not release it.

Ask them:

What evidence do you own and are responsible for providing to all residents and visitors, that confirms fluoridation will cause no immediate and long term harm to our children, families, athletes, pets, our environment and all who drink, swim, bath and use fluoridated water regardless of how much fluoridated City water they consume for their whole life?

What are the ingredients in the hydrofluorosilicic acid?

What is the Country of origin of the hydrofluorosilicic acid?

Who approved hydrofluorosilicic(fluorosilicic) acid for human consumption?

Currently the City of Prince George is withholding public fluoridation information requested in an ongoing 2013 Freedom of Information request.

Northern Health fully supports fluoridation and have no expertise or owned, research supported information to confirm consuming hydrofluorosilicic is healthy!

If fluoridation is safe why are they refusing to provide proof, while hiding behind protectionist legislation?

During a February 2013 City Council meeting video, Mr. Gall stated:

“The City water is very safe to drink. It is not poisoning anyone."

It was also suggested at the same meeting that the City take another look at all of the other chemicals that occur in our water as there may be other things that cause harm.

If City water was honestly "safe to drink," why would the City need to take yet another look at their earlier  statement that "City water is safe to drink"?

Will they let us know what they found?

Please search the fluoridation facts for yourself.

This web site including web links provided to other web sites and available through Google search's may provide you with a slightly different opinion from we are being lead to believe!

Please do your homework!

Ask the questions and demand honest, accurate and credible answers from all professionals who support fluoridation.

Hold the City, Northern Health, dentists and doctors accountable for their trusted, tenuously and socially granted rights, responsibilities and obligations.

If they are not accountable, who is and who can you trust?
