Fluoridation History - Discovery

In 1889 - Henri Moissian discovered fluorine. Fluorine is the 9th element in the periodic table of elements. It is a halogen, and cannot be made less toxic. Henri Moissian conducted many experiments identifying the many benefits and harms from fluorine.
Drinking fluorine / fluoride was known to be a deadly activity with many people who worked with and conducted research using fluorine and fluorides, dying early and painfully.

In 1937, Kaj Roholm conducted his own research on fluoride, fluoridation and it's many known uses and harms by contacting many other researchers. His report contains over 800 peer reviewed and referenced articles defining the many harms including dental fluorosis, a defined symptom of fluoride poisoning!

Fluoridation is an incomplete and failed experiment that began in Brantford, Ontario in 1945! Brantford was the third City in the World to forceably experiment with fluoridation on its residents!

Fluoridation was fully supported by the medical health officer Dr. H. M. Brown in 1953, before Mayor and Council of the City of Prince George passed a resolution October 4, 1954 to begin fluoridation of all of the small City's once safe, pure and clean water.
There were many reasons first discussed on what could be done to help local peoples teeth. The science was new, incomplete, untested and needed. People wanted to believe.
Local people were area of challenges including: a shortage of local dentists, high dental costs, poor nutritional health, high teenage pregnancy rates, STD's in the community. Jobs were scare and pay was very low.
Only 2 of the 377 students attending schools and checked for dental carries (cavities) had healthy teeth! Our children were in pain, loving the sugar, candies, and high starch products (newly available foods, like bread, not needing to be home made, providing more "free time" to the modern people). Most parents could not afford high dental costs, high taxes and other costs of living in the new and growing City. There was a need for water and sewer lines, dentists, doctors and a hospital, all things that made a City successful.
Dental hygiene, was just beginning to be acknowledged as an importation personal health choice and activity. Some people used baking soda to brush their teeth. As more modern times began, penicillin and menthol were added to the tooth paste to help freshen breath, reduce cavities and deal with other medical challenges such as cold sores.
Dental floss... was not invented!
Actual fluoridation using Sodium fluoride began at 2:00 PM, on September 12, 1955.
The History of Prince George will continue on the Prince George History Tab!
